The Straight A's - Scientist tape (1999)

The Straight A's, a co-ed San Diego trio were one of several predecessor bands entailing guitarist Jimmy LaVelle, who would eventually make a name for himself with/as The Album Leaf.  Nonetheless, the focal point of this particular project was Leilani Marie Clark whose emotive vox and clangly chords resonating through the lead-off track "Wash It All Away" make for a blissed-out, two minute surge of peerless indie pop.  The remainder of the cassette doesn't quite maintain "Wash's..." melodious momentum, but the Straight A's tempered angst is still worth delving into.
